Areas of Research/Study:

The research interest primarily revolves around sustainable development of cities which includes provision of livable residential areas, waste management etc. There is a need for regulating residential built environment for providing healthy and congenial habitats to residents. This requires exploring the interrelationship between the built environment, existing elements of nature and expectations / conveniences of the inhabitants for ensuring development of livable urban areas with sustainability.
‘Globalization’ and 'Modernism' has had its effect all around. Trends of globalization in the last quarter of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century brought about a paradigm shift in the conditions of living, thereby changing the livability criterion. Economic liberalization has brought affordability because of higher purchasing power of the residents. Residential areas have always been shaped by the prevalent life styles but the pace of change in the recent past has surpassed any of the earlier trends. Changing lifestyle and its dimensions across social, economic, cultural, psychological parameters are now driving the change in livability with an increased pace. Living conditions in residential areas is the reflection of prevailing built environment of that place. The research interest is to identify key attributes of livability in residential areas of India and explore their relationship with built environment. This would offer a livability Index to guide real estate developers and planners for developing better livable conditions through built environment.
Other areas of interest include studies regarding solid waste management in urban areas. Dissemination of widely used Green Practices for reducing, reusing and recycling solid waste in different sectors like residential, industrial, commercial, hospital, institutional is critical for sustainable development. This requires identification of various practices through primary survey and then analyzing these for short listing the ones which could be categorized as green practice. The aim of this research is to review urban expansion and analysis of life-styles to ascertain changing material flows as well as prevailing reuse and recycle practices. This would be a precursor for establishing Sound Material Cycle Society in India on the lines of developed countries.
